Check out this dope new album called Awake by my boy @Chris Seikaly, aka Sir Seiko, the DC mastermind behind l00p’D - chrisloops.bandcamp.com. Also, check out his new website - www.chrisloops.com - for some eargasmic beats and loop-style visualizations like you’ve never seen them before. This is art on another level and this kid is on the come up faster than a flailing freshwater salmon in the middle of mating season.
My first impression after hearing this 11-track banger was wowza. I feel like a 12-year-old girl at an NSYNC concert. If you were deep in slumber before this than boy, you’ll be so awake after listening it’ll feel like you chugged a thousand double shots mixed with Red Bull and Molly. The repeating loops make you feel like you’re floating in space, literally. It’s so amazing you won’t just be l00p’D, you’ll be l00p^2 (loop squared i.e. a loop inside of a loop, get it? – like Inception), cause you’ll have these loops on loop until you feel all loopy and satisfied.
But all jokes aside, this album packs some serious heat. It’s a refreshing exploration of what can loosely be described as ambient electronic eclecticism. It draws on elements of hip hop, R&B, EDM, and funk to create a unique and alternative sound. The ethereal vibes are reminiscent of artists like Flying Lotus, Nujabes, and J Dilla, yet, with a feel all its own, it makes a statement that needs no comparison. It uses a signature loop style that expands upon the idea of a traditional beat with novel dynamics. The soundscape is full of passion and flows like a soothing lullaby. The visuals that accompany select songs are personifications that stir the imagination and bring life to the sonic paintings as they’re being painted.
Let me tell you about a few of my favorite tracks to get you started. “Leavin” is a mellow joint with chill vibes and a psychedelic feel. It features some of Sir Seiko’s soulful, super saiyan-like blues-funk guitar licks that he’s known for. If you’ve ever felt the need to leave the past behind to get where you want to go then you’ll understand what this song is about. “DoOoP” is a mad fresh beat with hip hop-R&B stylings and a mild Japanese flavor that would make it fit perfectly into the soundtrack of any anime, like Samurai Champloo, or bumper for networks like Adult Swim. Speaking of bumps, even the interludes on this tape are poppin. Take “Bump”: it brings back that New Jack Swing that swept the late 80s and that’s why I bump it. My favorite of favorites though is “Lost in Space”. It’s another laid back song backed by an acoustic melody that’s tranquil like chamomile tea and an atmosphere that you can lose yourself in. The serene vocals provided by Daygo allude to what it feels like to live in a space that is abandoned and devoid of a life that once was. Well I don’t want to give it all away – that was only a highlight of the awesomeness this album has to offer and I promise you it won’t disappoint. But don’t take my word for it. Give it a listen, bob your head, and let your soul be awakened.
